About

Janine Maves started making art as a child. While growing up in Chicago, she attended the School of the Art Institute’s high school summer programs, and started college at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art. She received a B.A. in studio art and art history from the University of Minnesota. She studied museology in graduate school, but started a family and never finished her dissertation. Maves is addicted to workshops and continuing education in an ongoing challenge to think outside the parallelogram. She is on the teaching staff at Pullen Arts Center in Raleigh, NC.

While spending years in the corporate world, Maves worked as a graphic artist, proofreader, typesetter, and in communications and Web maintenance. She has been an active volunteer as a zoological park docent, an art museum docent, a tutor in public schools, and a mentor for at-risk students. She is an advocate for mental health awareness because of her history of depression, and has learned to think of creativity as hygiene: something that must be done every day to stay healthy. She considers herself fortunate to have lived afar and traveled widely, to have raised lovely, talented and amusing twin daughters, and to have been married to St. Philip lo these 30 years.

Maves keeps a website at janinemaves.com and blogs about her art at AltheaP.wordpress.com.
Her wearable art can be purchased at AltheaP.Etsy.com and AltheaP.1000markets.com. Maves also keeps a portfolio of her silk work at trunkt.org/AltheaP.
