I paint all the silk items myself. They are heat fixed and, in theory, can be washed on warm without spoiling the colours. However, I would not recommend washing the ties as it may be difficult to keep the shape.

Painting

I love painting on silk because the colours can be so intense but the end result is not entirely predictable! Each tie is unique – it would be impossible to produce an exact replica even if I wanted to!

My experience has ranged from character and theme ties to very large banners for display in churches. I’ve also done silk painting classes for children on activity camps. I’ve found the media wonderfully therapeutic as I’ve used it with one of my daughters when she was on chemotherapy treatment. We made all sorts including large wall hangings for the hospital and beautiful dolphin curtains for the bedroom!

I hope you enjoy my work.

Ties

My ties are all made of China Silk (Habotai 8) unless otherwise stated. They are approx 140cm long and 9.5cm across the widest point.

Bow Ties

My bow ties are all pre-tied. Just as soon as I can source some self tie ones suitable for silk painting, they’ll be in my shop too. They have an adjustable strap (up to 22cm) and hook fastening.

Scarves

My scarves vary in size. I use Habotai 8 China Silk or Silk Chiffon. The Habotai 8 is thicker and produces a more dressy scarf. The chiffon is finer and drapes more easily for slightly less formal wear. The paint is heat fixed but I don't recommend washing if you can help it as the texture of the silk is affected.

Postage

Everything is sent first class on receipt of payment. I don’t usually man my shop over the weekend so if payment is received then, your goods will be sent first thing Monday morning.
Postage is free worldwide.

Larger Orders

I give a discount for larger orders of ties and bow ties (this does not include custom orders).
10 per cent off 6 or more
20 per cent off 20 or more
If you want to take advantage of this, please convo me.

Commissions

Custom ties are £25. I may continue to use the design. I have a certain style which I am comfortable with and so long as the design fits within those limits I’m happy to have a go. Broadly speaking it is big, bright & bold. I’m willing to do paler stuff but no fine work, my lines are always chunky.
I usually like to allow up to two weeks for custom ties.

About Me

Lastly, for those of you who want a bit of personal information….
I’m married to Pete with 4 grown up children – Steve, Dave, Rachel, Naomi. When Rachel was 12 she was diagnosed with cancer and spent several years going through various treatments which looked like not working. It was during this time that I developed the silk painting which I had previously learned at St Helen’s House, Derby. At the time it was something beautiful to do with Rachel when she didn’t feel like doing anything. Happily – and against all expectation – she recovered and has enjoyed several years of good health. After her recovery I continued to enjoy silk paint and started selling my work
Unfortunately, Rachel's cancer became active again last year. Her treatment was successful, and despite some health challenges, she remains reasonably well.

My big interest is in Jesus and the Bible and this shows in some of my pictures and banners. I like to share some of the help and comfort I have received with others, along with the positive message of forgiveness and eternal life.
Other interests are playing the guitar and listening to music, cooking (a big fan of Jamie Oliver and Ainsley Harriot), reading, and walking in the countryside. Some of these themes come out in my work from time to time too. You may wonder where the Railway Collection comes from. Well my husband is into all things railway related so I often join him on a preservation railway trip on a steam train – fun!

If you're wondering about my unusual name Riisnaes (pronounced Reesness), it is a beautiful fjord in Norway just north of Bergen. My husband's grandfather was Norwegian and lived there for several years.
