About

allo dear hearts,

About MOI! GRiN! I am an artist, poet, teacher, crazy auntie, fairy godmother, Midwest farmer's daughter, nature-lover, and natural blond. I grew up on the family farm in Iowa and am descended from Norwegian, Swedish, German, English, Swiss, French, Turkish, and Fox (Meskwaki Tribe) stock.

I was cooking for a crowd by age 10. I gardened, canned tomatoes and green beans, made wild grape jam, sewed some of my own clothes ~ which often fell apart at the seams ~ drove tractors and grain trucks, bailed hay, moved cows, helped pull calves, bottle-fed orphaned lambs, babysat, helped one Grandma pluck chickens, gather eggs, pick strawberries, make homemade noodles, and care for my ailing Grandfather.

About

allo dear hearts,

About MOI!

I developed a reputation as an awesome cook, and displayed a propensity for breaking farm machinery, and neighbor boys' hearts. I coped by escaping into the solitude of the creeks, ponds, and woods. I even taught Sunday School.

At age 17 I trained as a nurses aide, worked in a nursing home, forewent college for a couple of years to work in county hospital obstetrics ward... birthin' babies, changing thousands of diapers and teaching mom's how to breast feed in the same hospital ward her mother had worked as a nurse and where she herself was born. I continued this whilst and at the same time attending SECC and Iowa Wesleyan College. Wesleyan, the oldest coeducational college west of the Mississippi, was the place my Great Grandma Lydia had gone to music school. I graduated in '83.

I then taught at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan
moved to Phoenix to teach art and grow my art career...
I lived there for 27 years and might of left sooner but for dealing with and surviving 4 potentially life threatening illnesses...

I moved to ABQ in 2010, yelled "there's no place like home!" and started doing a lot of "happy dances".

I soon found myself writing poetry in earnest and getting involved with the awesome poetry community here!

I have since published my 6-word memoire, which reads
"Farm girl sprouts artist-poeta wings!" GRiN...

Other publications include:

My penultimate mission is to spark nothing short of expansive inclusive everyday enlightened kind community everywhere!

If you want to know more than that you'll have to ask...

P.S. I am creating a new body of work integrating watercolor-gouache, mixed media, photography, assemblage, poetry, handmade chapbooks, and installation art and hope to bring that into collaboration with other artists and community. The themes parallel the rich, varied and layered themes of hemyr poetry ~ a diverse blend of nature, mysticism, fairy tales, dreams, sensuality, wholeness, childhood experiences, farm life, the New Mexico landscape, and the landscape of the soul and spirit.

My card biz, JuLie's FLYiNG HeaRTs aLTeReD ViNTaGe ePHeMeRa & oTHeR MeaNiNGFuL LiTTLe THiNGs, began as solace and source of connection in the misty memory times of serious illness almost two decades ago… when I was too fatigued to work on my BiG ART, ie: paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures, masks.
