About

My designs are influenced by my life long interests in needle arts, lace, crystal and nature, especially flowers. As a child I made potholders on a loom, sewed doll clothes, learned embroidery from my mother and crochet from my grandmother's lace doilies and handkerchief edging.

You can find "KRDesigns11" on Facebook and Blogspot. Plus you can contact me thru my Etsy shop. I participate in Art Fairs in the Chicago, Illinois area and have been juried to be an Illinois Artisan in jewelry.

In mid life, I decided to explore the right side of my brain and started studying a variety of art techniques from local and visiting artists, college classes, and from books and magazines. Having been a CPA and auditor, I felt I needed to see in another way to express my feelings and balance myself.

I started with classes in collage and paper making, combining images, textures and color in new ways. I credit my transparent watercolor teacher for showing me color mixing, knowledge which I draw on whether dying fibers, drawing/painting with soft pastels or combining beads in my jewelry.

I discovered that I like working with my hands, making items feel as good as they look. Ease of use is considered and closures have been adapted so that any wearer can put on/take off the item independently. In fashion design and fabric weaving classes, I learned the way an object drapes relates to how well the wearer feels. I want them to feel beautiful!

I believe the way to stay young is to keep learning new things. I learned basic off loom bead weaving stitches such as peyote and right angle weave as well as bead embroidery. My love of variety causes me to intuitively rotate my color palate and learn new stitches and techniques to incorporate in my jewelry. My eye for detail is expressed by using tiny beads as well as looking for interesting beads and patterns, adding just the right bead, many times one by one. I cater to an interested customer's color preferences, body type and budget as much as possible. I have participated in group sales activities such as not-for-profit organizations fund raising boutiques and holiday sales events.

My love of color is shown trying new color combinations in the appropriate ratios as well as in the varieties of finishes on the beads used in my jewelry patterns. My free form bracelets look like sculptural collage. Inspiration for designs can come from nature, things I have seen or from somewhere inside me. My doodle inspired designs have universal appeal as observers have told me they look like ones women in Kenya, Africa, create.

My work has been on consignment at the Illinois Artisan Shops in Chicago and Whittington, Illinois and at TLD Design Center & Gallery in Westmont, Illinois.
