Kathryn Oaten's Profile
Having grown up in Cornwall, I went to Falmouth School of Art and Design before doing my textile degree at De Montfort University in Leicester, where I developed my own style of working with stitched handmade paper on the surface decoration course.
After a period of working on other design projects, I developed new ideas and techniques in my work, which is now based on wild, but fragile, plant forms and animals. I have exhibited thoughout the UK and have work in the Hertfordshire County Arts collection.
I make my own paper, which is recycled from printers off-cuts and office waste, then dried and dyed in small batches. The designs are then pieced together in sections, then stitched on to a backing of calico or organdie. Pictures are worked into at this stage. I paint into the design or add pure stitchwork for extra depth and detail…
