Kate McCulloch's Profile

About

Firstly, thank you for checking out my profile and wanting to know what I'm all about :)

You can check out my shop at http://www.etsy.com/shop/katiemacceramics

I'm Kate, I design and make all the work you see in my shop from my windowless studio with a fantastic heater, my temperamental kiln. To counteract my lack of windows I have plastered my walls with my photographs of coastal adventures and day trips.

It is just me, I design, create, email, stock take, marketing, photographer, packaging department, accountant, cola drinker, biscuit devourer and any other role you can come up with. I started selling my own work after I left University in 2007, well to be honest I didn't get going till 2008 as I needed a little encouragement - as well as somewhere with a kiln…

I started selling my own work after I left University in 2007, well to be honest I didn't get going till 2008 as I needed a little encouragement - as well as somewhere with a kiln.

I spent my childhood on the island of Antigua for many years and spent my summers here in the UK visiting family (I hear you chuckle), those days were mainly filled with spending time with grandparents roaming Northumberland, especially Kielder Forest and the coast. While doing my studies at Uni I came across many techniques and ideas and decided to throw it all together while combining my love for the sea, and here is the product of those experimental days :)

So, what makes me different, many things and here are a few:

I don't use a wheel or make molds. All my work is based on slab building - but no standard slab building. I actually decorate a slab of plaster and then pour my clay blend over the top. Let it set and you have a slab, yay.

I don't use standard casting slip or manufactured paperclay. I mix my chosen clay with recycled paper, either by using a casting slip version or by drying out plastic clay and slaking that down. Paper that I shred myself, a great way of disposing of bank statements. It is quite a labour intensive process but the textures that come from it are wonderful and one of the major parts of my work.

I don't bisque my work, I fire it one go, glaze and all. This is known as raw firing. I only glaze the inside of my ceramic vessels or just one side of my hanging decorations. The use of paperclay also helps this process as it's mighty strong in 'green' state.

So all in all, I'm not your standard potter - everything is a little backwards but that's how I like it.

I also work part time in the wonderful world of retail, it's a job. Of course, I would prefer to be doing this for my living, but in this climate one has to be sensible. I work with a great team and great friends so I can't complain.

I am new to the Etsy world, so be gentle. I value feedback and always striving to improve. It's wonderful watching the 'visits' grow and I would like to thank you in advance for paying me a visit. I aim to add work regularly and keep it up to date so check back now and then to see what's new. If you fancy emailing me, you can find me on info [!at] katie-mac.co.uk equally you can check out more work (that I haven't got around to putting in the shop) at katie-mac.co.uk

I hope that's built up a picture of me and my little ceramic world, so go take a gander at my shop. I hope that it reminds you of those sunny days on the beach or at sea, with the wind on your face and the sense of calm.

I'm off to go beachcombing, fancy taking a stroll?
