I was brought up in the countryside. That period of my life holds many happy memories for me; as does the land on which my family remain, to this day.
The North East of England has a rich cultural heritage: from Pre-history to Roman occupation, through to more recent events such as the death of the coal mining industry. My work reflects an exploration of that history through the use of colour, texture and pattern.
British sheep breeds are varied in colour and their wool is naturally soft, comfortable and sustainable. Synthetic materials have their place though; what is important is knowing how to combine the two for comfort and durability.
I am drawn to the rhythmical repeating movements of knitting: particularly how the simplest of tools can create both simple and complex structures…
