Kriket Broadhurst's Profile

About

Hi I'm Kriket, jewellery designer, ceramicist and Mum to an energetic and enthusiastic little boy. I have been collecting and creating ever since I was tiny myself and this lifelong passion for making has taught me to be resourceful and has fostered a sharp eye for detail, resulting in a unique design style.
All these years later I have put those skills to use as a silversmith designing and creating jewellery which features my totally unique, hand crafted faience beads as well as beautiful sea glass that I find on adventures to beaches all over the world.

My passion for my craft was initially sparked over 10 years ago when my ceramicist Mum gave me some old bead recipes based on the 5000 yr old Ancient Egyptian technique of faience. Essentially faience is a type of ceramic base that is only once fired in the kiln and is made up of raw ceramic ingredients such as silica, clay and colouring…

Essentially faience is a type of ceramic base that is only once fired in the kiln and is made up of raw ceramic ingredients such as silica, clay and colouring oxides. There were some gaps missing in Mum's original recipes however, and so I spent a few good years just trialling new recipes, raw materials, blends & oxides until I developed opulent glossy beads in a range of unique colours that I felt I could truly call my own. As a result of all those years of trials the surface of my beads are shiny and glossy and the colours rich and pure.
Most of this developmental time was spent in the Uk, where after a few years, I moved my practice into a little shop which doubled as a gallery and studio. Managing my business taught me so much and I loved the challenge of developing new seasonal collections as well as helping customers find the perfect piece of jewellery.
My other passion is beach combing and one day whilst scouring the coastline of Anglesey on Wales, I discovered sea glass for the very first time. Like a magpie I collected as many little, perfect jewel like pieces as I could; I just couldn’t bear to leave these treasures on the beach! My hordes of sea glass sat in trays and bottles all over our house until eventually I began incorporating these perfect nuggets of glass into my designs. I now have sea glass collections from Seaham in North East England, Barcelona, France, Italy and Anglesey.
Eventually the sunshine and warmth of Australia began to seep back into our minds and our hearts and in November 2015 we made the massive decision to sell my business, leave jobs and friends and relocate back to Sydney. Our little magpie, whom thankfully loves to travel and explore as much as we do is relishing this new chapter in our lives. Whenever possible we can be found making things or beach combing for treasure, dreaming up all sorts of possibilities for our finds.
