Kris Cravens' Profile
A lot of my work is slab rolled and formed. I like the ability to give my work personality through hand altering. I often wheel throw the basic shape and then set out to transform that basic shape into something unique and one of a kind. I am not a production potter. I really can't throw the same shape again and again with little variance. I don't like to produce pieces that look like they were cast in a mold. I like my pieces to sing that they were hand formed.
My background is clothing construction – Fashion Design. Quite a bit of my work is highly decorated, much like fabric. I try to give the clay piece a personality and often give my teapots names. Clay is a lot like working with fabric. I like to hand build and cutting clay into pattern pieces is like cutting fabric. "Everyday" pottery is my focus. I like thinking of a beautiful pot or platter that you can use in everyday life…
