AMELIA LEATHER COLLECTION's Profile

About

I was born in Bogota, Colombia and have been interested in art for as long as I can remember.
I began winning drawing competitions at an early age. I still remember those wonderful feelings of satisfaction when I used to receive First Place. I studied art in Colombia, but I was not able to pursue my career as an artist, but that didn’t stop me from learning and gaining much more knowledge about the power of color and its wide range of possibilities.
Later I studied Fashion Design and sold my artwork to friends in order to pay for school. I remember taking “Techniques of Expression”, which allowed me the freedom to use all kinds of elements that could be mixed to create my work.

Around that time I became interested in natural materials and started looking at other artists use of materials such as iron, stone, wood, fibers etc.
After moving to New York, I was feeling the influence of the cultural variety in this great city and without forgetting my roots, began working toward creating a type of decoration that was not painting or sculpture but something different which could transmit all the feelings I wanted to express, while creating a work of art. This resulted in my unique leather artworks which I consider a mix of traditional, modern and futuristic.
Traditional: Because the creation of my artwork implements the technique of crochet, providing me the facility to manipulate leather pieces, joining them together in a clean and great texture.
Modern: Because each piece is a visual focal point of striking colors, different natural elements and geometric forms that lend a modernizing element to any décor.
Futuristic: Because the awareness of natural elements has become necessary to the future of our environment.
It’s my wish to become an inspiration to others to appreciate what nature has to offer. I work on every little detail with a critical eye on every single piece. Each piece is unique, because each one is like a poem written for someone special. I put my feelings into it, so you will feel it too.
