Growing up in the Adirondack region of upstate New York, I leaned many traditional country skills at a young age. I have always been fascinated with natural materials and have been involved in basket making, crocheting, knitting, and quilting for many years.
When my sister began to raise Icelandic sheep on her farm, the exceptional fleece of this breed caught my attention. Many people think of wool as a scratchy material that can bother the skin, but the rich fleece shorn off the lambs in the first season changed my perception altogether.
Since I am involved in the shearing process at the farm, I can pick the most promising fleece and keep it separated at the earliest possible point in the production. I have set up my own spinning workshop and approach every phase in the time-honored traditional way used for centuries in the Adirondacks…
