About

My name is Denny. My grandmother was Lucinda, who always saved special things "for nice." I live with my husband in the desert of southern Arizona where we love the outdoors, but hole up inside in the heat of summer.

The creations and finds here are made and found by my mother, my friends, and me. Color and texture inspire us. We love finding and making things that are attractive and that may be useful. We hope these things are used and enjoyed--not saved just "for nice"!

Lucinda was my little grandmother (only about 4'10") who always saved special things "for nice." She thought I was about IT and would do just about anything for me. She was a wonderful cook and loved to make people happy with the food she made and shared. She sewed many of her clothes and I remember shopping with my mother for fabric for Grandma (little flowery prints). I remember seeing her crochet and she and my mother showed me other "fancy work" that Grandma did. She learned how to do needlework from the nuns when she went to school at the convent in Tucson.

She lived through the Depression and experienced financial hardships. That taught her to use things until they were all used up. She also decided that new or special things would be saved "for nice," supposedly to be brought out only for special occasions. After she was gone, my mother found many things stored away, still in their original packaging. Recently, my mother gave me an unopened box of "china" dishes from Sears. My parents gave those dishes to Grandma Lucinda shortly after they were married. The box was still sealed shut. I opened it and have put those dishes into use. I think of her every time I take one out of the cupboard. To give you an idea of how long Grandma saved those dishes (because they were too nice for her to use) and how long my mother kept them unopened . . . . . My parents were married in 1951!

As for the handmade items in my shop, I began sewing when my mother taught me to make simple items, usually without shape. I began quilting in the 1990's because I was drawn to the designs and colors. I love the history of sewing and quilting and the connection I feel with all those who sewed and quilted before me. I also love the contemporary look I get with the wonderful new fabrics out there! It wasn't until I showed a real interest in quilting that my mother gave me some unfinished quilt tops that Grandma Lucinda had started. I finished one and gave it to my mother for Christmas. Sometimes I see it on her bed. It makes her feel good and she's sentimental about some of the fabrics that she recognizes in that quilt. While I was working on it, I figured out why Grandma hadn't finished it! Quite the challenge! Some of her quilt tops are still unfinished. Perhaps I should get them out and make plans for them.

My mother, my friends, and I also love collecting and sharing nice vintage treasures and making nice things to share with you. My mother Mary keeps finding special vintage items and makes wonderful use of fabrics. My friends Kim, Coralie, Sue, Jacquelyn, and 15-year-old Katie also make items for the shop and help lead me astray when it comes to handmade items, vintage items and estate sales . . .

I do the listing and the transactions. I do the shipping. My mother and friends help find and make things for the shop. Please look around and enjoy!!

Maybe you'll feel Grandma Lucinda's spirit when you and we use and enjoy these "nice things." She might just be laughing her little laugh and smiling with us now!
