I live, love, write, create folk art, garden, and publish a new garden writing magazine in Colorado. While I've been writing professionally (freelance) for about twenty years, a few years back I decided to create my own zine, Greenwoman. The thrill of creating a zine led me to try a bigger magazine, also named Greenwoman, in 2011. It's been a wonderful experience learning about self-publishing and working with other writers and artists.

Favorite materials

In my collage work, I love to work with just about everything paper, photographs, wrapping paper, illustrations from old and new books, pictures from magazines, calendars, cards, seed packets, etc, I especially love pictures of flowers and garden related material, In my writing, I love to be inspired by EVERYTHING in Nature

Greenwoman Magazine - First issue Spring/Summer 2011. A garden writing magazine featuring fiction, creative nonfiction, art, poetry, commentary, cartoons, interviews, book reviews and much more. Produced by myself and my daughter Zora Knauf and featuring the work of many talented artists and writers.

Greenwoman Zine - 2008-2010 A compilation of gardening stories, articles, recipes, poetry and etc., from myself and others, focusing on living and gardening in Colorado

Humorous essays, including “Romancing the Seed” and “Green with Envy”, published nationally in GreenPrints (an Utne Reader award-nominated garden writing journal).

1990's through 2005: Feature articles in Springs Magazine, The Pikes Peak Journal, and Colorado Homes & Lifestyles Magazine, including, “Art in Architecture: The Story of Van Briggle Tile” and “Embodying the Spirits” (an interview with Colorado authors D’Arcy Fallon, Kathy Brandt and Andrea Herrera on their first books).

Denver Post “Colorado Voices” Columnist finalist, April 2006. Chosen as one of 16 guest columnists for this year -- 2008-2009. I start on February 22, 2009!

Radio:

2005-2007. Regular (twice-monthly) guest commentator on Western Skies, the news show produced by Southern Colorado NPR affiliate, KRCC. Sometimes humorous, often nature-oriented, and sometimes political essays have included: “My Gender Bender Hen”, “Triops!”, “Homeland Invaders”, “Zen Doggie”, and “Big Box Sphinx”.

Awards:

2002: First place in the Creative Nonfiction category of the Paul Gillette Memorial Writing Contest (Pikes Peak Writers Conference) for “The Chicken Chronicles”.

2003: First place in the Pikes Peak Library District’s All Pikes Peak Reads Competition for essay “Freak Show”.

Books:

Manitou Springs Garden Club member/officer from 1999-2005. Helped create, edited, and promoted a book of art, garden lore, essays and recipes for MSGC entitled A Taste for Gardening (2004). It is currently in its fourth printing. (Hmmm, I should try to get this on Etsy!)
