Judy Hilton Gex's Profile

About

Magpie Apothecary is me, Judy Gex. I love to travel, spend time with friends, animal babies and growing things in my ever-expanding garden. I was born in beautiful New Orleans and spent my formative years living on the Mississippi Gulf Coast where, after a 10 year stint working for the local newspaper, I became a partner in a little screen printing studio.

I met a boy (artist Jeff Wood) on the internet in 1996 and soon after relocated to Myrtle Beach to begin the journey that would lead me to many foreign shores and music festivals around the world representing Drowning Creek Studio (http://www.drowningcreek.com). Often considered the social presence for the studio, I always finds myself surrounded by friends and fellow artists.

Though having handled sales and service for DrowningCreek.com since 2000 as The Poster Mistress, I've been secretly working on my own artful ventures and plans for world domination. That venture is Magpie Apothecary.

In a world rife with harsh chemicals and all things unnatural, I've been on a personal journey the last 2 decades to find products that are natural and healthy for use in my own home. Finding time and time again that commercial products were a disappointment and wanting to eliminate sodium laurel sulphate, parabens, propylene glycol, artificial fragrances and colors from my own toiletries and eliminate other nasty chemicals from my cleaning arsenal and garden, I set out to learn how to make my own. Having long been interested in herbalism, essential oils and flower essences, this journey has slowly become a focus point for me.

I organically grow most of the produce consumed in the household and am currently working on establishing a perennial medicinal herb and a bee garden. My time is split between working on my herbalist studies, building a yoga and art studio, taking pottery classes, gardening and raising exotic chickens.

Currently the listings in my store are primarily the stock from a small hobby, craft and ceramics store that was owned by my MIL from 1978 to 1982. The building will be my yoga and pottery/art studio, but I must clear out the contents before it can be remodeled. There are approximately 2500 vintage ceramic molds, bisque ware, latch hook kits, macrame supplies, flower making supplies and a myriad of other craft items I haven't even gotten to yet. Many items are OOAK. The FIL offered to back a truck up to the building and haul everything away, but I would rather find homes for the items where these pieces can be used, upcycled or utilized.

As time allows, Magpie Apothecary will expand to include my own crafts, art and photography, but for now, the focus is on emptying the building so that the transformation can truly begin!

You can also find me selling rock posters, handbills and art prints under the name drowningcreek on Etsy.
