Karen Malcolm's Profile

About

I up-cycle, recycle and creatively restore worn, discarded and vintage boxes into functional art. I sand, repair, rebuild when needed and then hand paint, collage and/or embellish my works with found objects including vintage buttons, letterpress block letters, pie tins, advertising rulers and other found objects. I also create mixed media found object assemblages, shadow boxes and small works on canvas. Each of my items is one of a kind and made from 80% or more up-cycled, recycled or reused objects.

For the past several years I directed an organization that strives every day to achieve social and economic justice. Doing art is my way of keeping centered and finding satisfaction in producing something to touch, see, hold or wear.

I live in Rhode Island, the "Ocean State," near the beautiful Narragansett Bay where I spend my summer sailing my tiny boat Tara, a Rhode Island built SeaSprite.
