"Manuela takes a painterly approach to glass using bold and brilliant colors and exploring a variety of techniques. Her beads are colorful abstractions of flora and fauna painted with the motion of the fluid glass itself. She works intuitively to draw the surface design using shards, murrine, dots and a variety of stringers and twisties. Manuela layers colors and works with opacity and transparency to achieve a richness of depth and interesting surface features in her work.
Creating lines with glass stringers is a demanding technique and is often used with rigid results, but in Manuela’s hands it produces freewheeling, charming designs that are like wonderful doodles. With a few deft black lines she creates a face with personality, for a bird or creature that would be at home in a Miro painting.
