"Our past creates our future. Growing up on a family dairy farm in MN gave me many introspective days for thinking and observing. Studying bookbinding and working in commercial binderies gave me the skills and diligence to create an end product. Painting onto paper allows creative endeavors to spring forth. These practices allow me to create art works. I practice the art of painting paste papers which I discovered as a bookbinder. I like to experiment with paper, canvas and collage. I am intrigued by color and tones as patterns in architecture and nature.

Designing, binding books and painting on paper allow me to search for what lies beneath the surface and discover what tugs at my heart. My artist books come from life’s daily reactions and observations of people and events. Beginning with a concept, thought or perception, I imagine the content, style and binding to best communicate visually in the form of a book. The book is an ideal form and vessel with which to carry ideas."

Marie Kelzer is a paste paper maker, bookbinder, designer, painter and artist. While studying bookbinding in the mid 1980’s, she fell in love with making "paste papers". She has followed a tried and true paste paper recipe for years. Many of her art works come from this medium.

With her paste paper patterns she creates artist books, binds blank books and makes paper products from covered pencils to coasters. She has a line of ArtWorks suitable for framing, paste papers for bookbinding and has painted on canvas in the form of floorcloths and placements.

Marie’s paste paper designs, hand bound books and expressive artists’ books are exhibited and collected worldwide by private collectors, art and academic institutions. Her works are sold through shows and online sellers Etsy and Zazzle under the names Marie Kelzer Designs and/or Paper Arts.

Marie grew up in Minnesota, lived in North Carolina, Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco; and now resides in Marina Del Rey, California near the ocean breezes and positive ions.

I fell in love with making "paste papers" after taking several classes in the art of making paste papers in the mid 1980's in the San Francisco vay area. Paste papers are decorative papers hand painted using brushes, tools and household gadgets to create designs over a surface covered with a paste and acrylic paints mixture. They were used for both cover papers and endpapers during the 16th through 18th centuries and made a come back in the 20th century.

My paste paper patterns have grown over the years. I have limited edition books totally “so far” 400 designs in 8 volumes. Each design is an original pattern whether it is one of a kind or a design that I duplicate by hand. My paste papers have been used by others including artists and binders and the designs have been licensed to fabric manufacturers. As these designs are all copyrighted they are not to be copied, reproduced or distributed without written permission.

I have worked in the Bookbinding/Preservation world at institutions such as U.C. Berkeley and San Francisco Public Library, where I perfected my hand skills. From my introduction to Paste Papers in the 1980’s I have continued to create and hand make books and all kinds of products and sell them through retail outlets and fairs. I have also made floor cloths and have framed my paste paper collections. In 2012 I moved from San Francisco to Marina Del Rey in southern California. I am happily close to the beach ions.

I am currently a member of the Ten Women on Montana gallery in Santa Monica, California where my work can be viewd and purchased. www.tenwomen.org

All of this for the love of paste papers which I’d love for everyone everywhere to experience the joys of the many designs possible and to take a hand at making paste papers yourself.

Thanks for visiting! I will continue to add products as I go forward and I appreciate you taking a look at them.
