Artist by calling, sculptor by training and jewelry designer/creator by upbringing. For three and a half decades I have pursued the creative life. At age 14 I began learning metal craft working in my fathers jewelry studio. Along the way I earned a MFA in sculpture (State University of NY at New Paltz) and created many hundreds of pieces, large and small.
Metals have always been my preference. Starting with gold and silver in my fathers studio. Dad, James Author Schwabe, was a master goldsmith and model maker. For many years his biggest customer was Cartier, NY. When I went off to college I took up large scale sculpture under the guidance of world renowned sculptor Richard Stankiewicz. I worked primarily in steel, copper and bronze. In later years I found pewter. A wonderful medium with great properties for the creative hand, AND a great look!
Many themes interest me and I love to explore them all. From the human form to the critters of the forest and sea; from the creations of man (machines, buildings, etc), to things geomorphic (the stuff of the earth itself)and, of course, things imaginary. Humor is an important part of much of my work.
