Martha Lytton Van Trees' Profile

About

Jewelry that makes a contemporary, unexpected statement is the prize of the modern woman or man’s wardrobe. The artisan silver and copper jewelry of UrbanJule is on-trend and out-of-the-ordinary, handcrafted from start to finish and inspired by universal forms: the curve of a neck, the bend of an arm, the shape of muscle and the action of fingers.

We love to create personalized pieces, and providing superb customer service is as much our art form as bending metal. We take pride in both, and we feel that our dedication makes both of them superior.

We’re especially focused on creating paired signature jewelry pieces for couples starting their lives together, as their stories touch and intrigue us, and we try to infuse that special bond into the work they’ll wear.

The jewelry of Urban Jule is the work of a mother-son team of jewelry artisans, Martha Lytton Van Trees and Charles Clapper. Martha (that’s me) is a trained artisan with a background in Fine Arts from the Corcoran School of Art and northern Virginia community colleges. I came to the art of metal jewelry in my late fifties, after four children, six grandchildren, and years in the 9-to-5 world. The 9-to-5 job I left behind without looking back, but my family – a creative, inspiring lot with grandkids ranging from one to 17 – remains vital to me.

Charles served for seven years in the United States Navy before becoming my apprentice artisan at UrbanJule; he’s also now the photographer and maintains his interest in the culinary arts and graphic novels. Charles is also our resident chainmaille expert and is in charge of our sister shop, just opened: visit UrbanLynx at www.etsy.com/shop/UrbanLynx.

Another essential member of the studio is Myshkin, my Maine Coon cat, who mostly sleeps but occasionally jumps in my lap while I’m working to remind us of his vital importance to the work.

Originally, this shop was called Martha’s Many Things, as its offerings included not only jewelry but painted glass and knitted pieces – among the handcrafting skills I have picked up through my art education. However, I developed a focus on jewelry because working on a small scale with metal is by far the most satisfying of my art forms, and today UrbanJule focuses on this range of handcrafted products.

A portion of the proceeds from each purchase at UrbanJule goes to Global Camps Africa. We’ve recently become acquainted with this organization, which offers week-long camps in South Africa for children affected by AIDS. I’ll be traveling to South Africa in 2014 to pass along artisan jewelry skills to children in that country.

Thank you for visiting UrbanJule. Please contact us to discuss the modern signature jewelry piece you’d like to have created – we’ll be happy to solidify your vision.
