Marvin Johnson's Profile

About

Hello, my name is Marvin, I was born in 1966 in Ashington, a mining town in the North East of England. The town was made famous by many sporting heroes including England footballers Jackie and Bobby Charlton, Jackie Milburn and England cricketer Steve Harmison to name but a few.

I took a keen interest in art from a very early age. This love affair, I attribute to my father, who was an extraordinary talent in this sphere as a young child. Unfortunately this talent went unfulfilled due to career choice. I decided that I owed it to my father to fully exploit what ability he had inherited.

My artistic ability was first recognised during my primary school education, where I was awarded ‘best artist’ in the school. Following my school education I enrolled on a 3 year Graphic Design Course. I then attended Sunderland Polytechnic where I studied Technical Illustration, Photography and Art History.

Frustrated by the technical constraints and lack of expressive freedom, I left college, and decided to teach myself to paint in oils whilst working in the electronic industry. Although not favourable, this career choice funded my numerous trips to many of Europe’s great art galleries, a great source of inspiration and learning.

Still developing my trade as a painter, I worked in a picture framers for 3 years before finally becoming a full time professional artist. I have a wide range of subject matter but especially enjoy Figurative work.

My work has been sold to many private collections in the UK, USA and South Africa. Many galleries throughout the North East of England have also represented my work.

I recently won an award for International Artist Magazine with my ‘Sleeping Tulips’. The painting was also published in the International Artist Annual “100 Ways to Paint Still Life and Florals”.

My recent portrait of the late Sir Bobby Robson helped raise significant funds for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Cancer Charity.
