Mathew Marlin Mallory Phillips' Profile

About

How I got started
I studied art and design in Seattle, Washington, Oakland / San Francisco, California, and in Mannheim, Germany. I was really captured, blown away with the idea of being able to make ideas into 3D reality. Then by the idea of being able to mass produce the Surrealist objects that are not seen everyday.

In design school, learned mainstream manufacturing techniques, which I later learned to be quite cost prohibitive. Recently, I've found accessible production techniques I can use to bring these ideas to life.

Process & Today
I incorporate plenty of research into my process. Researching techniques, materials, manufacturing processes, sources, technologies; as well looking for new and different materials while travelling to other countries. I'm working from home, until I hit the big time and can…

I'm working from home, until I hit the big time and can expand. I like to play some music to keep the energy flowing; kind of like having my own dance party (with manufacturing).

I'm a full time creative person, and am using Etsy as an outlet for my creations. I'm inspired by nature, science, technology and spirituality, which I've learned are just differentiations of the same thing.

Technology
I hold an Associate of Arts Degree in Technology. I started making lamps in 1999, but the difficulties until recently were: safety with 230 volts, energy efficiency, voltage compatibility around the world, lack of electrical infrastructire, global plug shapes, and with low-voltage lights, matching ever-changing battery voltage with the exacting needs of the lights.

USB has brought standardization as well as versatility and has allowed me to once again be creative without having to be an electrical engineer. It also allows anyone in the world to use my products, which can bring Light, Internet Access, electricity, heat, cooling and other products and services to the developed and developing world.

LED technology has brought energy efficiency, cool running temperatures, needed to make lighting accessible and portable.

Upcycling uses valuable materials that might otherwise become pollutants in our environment and showcases the often unseen beauty in “everyday” objects. I hope to be able to help others see this beauty, help keep Earth beautiful and enhance their lives with more useful, functional objects.

World Citizen
I'm an American living in Germany. I've also lived in Canada and The Netherlands. I came to Germany the first time in 1985 and the memories of it never went away. I came back in 1993 in the Army, and once again in 2009. I love Europe and it's lifestyle. Ich spreche auch Deutsch en een beetje Nederlands.

I'm developing a way to take what I need on my travels to be able to make and fill orders on the go go go.
