Michele Morehouse's Profile

About

Although I grew up in San Francisco I have lived most of my life amongst the rolling windswept hills of western Sonoma County. It's my love of nature that has always directed both my subject matter and to a large extent my mediums. Flower forms have always graced my work and my intimate relationship with clay began oh so many years ago. Whether in ceramic, painting or pastel nature rides supreme in my heart and mind.

Who could not love raku?. It's use of all the elements of earth, fire, air and water adds a certain alchemy to my work. I have taught raku glazing at my studio in Mexico for over 10 years. I adore Mexico and Mexican art. I have maintained a studio there for 30 years.

My use of bright vivid color really developed in Mexico and has most certainly been directly influenced by Mexico's colorful houses and dress. I also love Mexican Tree of Life styled candelabras! The Mexican tradition of Trees of Life candelabras have always interested me. I take advantage of this metaphor by using my own personal iconography in place of the standard Adam and Eve narrative so commonly seen. The action of lighting a candle above the content once again breathes a little fire of life into my work. My candelabras and candlesticks have been described as completely magical with the candles lit and other lights are low.

No lead in my glazes ever. I SO hope you enjoy viewing my work. I hope you'll take a little time to give me your own thoughts about my work.
