Missie Rabdau's Profile

About

I've always loved jewelry. As a child, my mom and dad purchased unique jewelry for me, most coming from out west and designed by Native American artisans. I was really attracted to turquoise and sterling silver. These artisans have inspired me with my own line of jewelry.

I was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Northern Virginia. I am married and have four wonderful children, ages 19, 16, 11 and 5.

After high school, I attended The Washington Business in McLean, VA. I immediately went to work for one of the largest law firms there. I spent about 15 years doing legal assistant work, before deciding to stay home with my children.

My time spent at home, gave me an opportunity to explore art. I started a business in decorative furniture painting that I loved. Not long after that, a friend of mine introduced me to beading. Things evolved and I started my own business. At the time, I was in several stores in Virginia, North Carolina and Key West.

Living in Richmond, VA at the time, was an amazing experience. Richmond is a very artistic city. With VCU there, I was able to take advantage of some really great classes. My instructor at the time, encouraged me to pursue metal smith work. Taking these classes inspired me to take my business and line of jewelry to a different level. I was able to learn new techniques in metal design and incorporate it into my style and line of jewelry. Once I moved back to Northern Virginia, I continued taking metal smith classes and learned this is where I wanted to focus. My creative inspiration comes from nature, the ocean, a song or music, a piece of fabric, or a painting or photograph. Often, I am asked what style of jewelry I create. I guess the best way to describe my style would be earthy and rustic, with a dash of elegance. As long as I can create and work with my hands, I will be happy. I am blessed and thank God for this wonderful journey.
