Michelle Walker's Profile
My passion for making jewelry started with gemstones. Several years ago, we started collecting and studying semi-precious and precious faceted stones (not beads). I studied everything from quartz and topaz to emeralds and rubies. I learned identification techniques, measurements, and basic grading. I still find the process fascinating and love colored gemstones.
I thought I should do something with them. I wanted to do something beyond setting them in simple earrings or pendants. So I studied wire wrapping, stone setting, and other metal techniques in order to be able to apply my vision.
Wire wrapping led inevitably to beading. I think it's usually the other way around. Practicing beading has led to numerous opportunities to experiment with different materials and has my head buzzing with ideas for the gemstones…
