I love hair. Hair off of sheep, llamas, alpaca, and little goats. Hair from rabbits and even bison. I spend a whole lot of time thinking about and playing with hair. I also love dolls. I didn't play with dolls when I was a girl. I started playing with dolls when I was about 25. By that time I had already started playing with hair. It was inevitable that eventually the two would collide.
I taught myself needle felting from the first poke. This method of soft sculpture uses a barbed needle to enmesh wool fibers together through friction. You basically start with something roughly resembling a cotton ball and mold it by poking it thousands of times. My dolls and animals are little friends who reside in my head and skitter about until I have the time to felt them out. Each is unique and has a story that makes it a character and not just a doll. When I am working on a piece I always try to get a certain feeling from it. What it would be like to peek through a mousehole and see a tiny mouse pirouetting around in a tutu? How sweet but strange it would be to see a darling little pig in overalls! I try to create a bit of magic. I hope one of my pieces can inspire a little magic in your heart.
For the past 10 years I have had increasing health problems which, in the last two years, has led to severe limitations to the work I can do with my hands. I have so many ideas and I never know if I will be able to felt all day one day or not at all. It is very frustrating but also makes creating even more rewarding because each piece is such a labor to finish.
