About

Let's start at the very beginning...a very good place to start. The Sound of Music is my all time favorite movie. I love nothing more than when Fraulein Maria makes play clothes out of the damask drapes---ahhhh---a woman after my own heart! Upcycling before it was in vogue. Creativity. Resourcefulness. And all in the name of giving children something wonderful!

That is what my attempt in Nellie Belle's Closet is all about. Upcycling. Creativity. Resourcefulness. And all in the name of giving children (and the occasional adult) something wonderful.

Why Nellie Belle's Closet? My grandma's name was Nellie Belle. And she wore it well. Her favorite color? RED. The brighter, the better. Purses, lipstick, scarves, geraniums... a kitchen wallpapered entirely in red strawberries with placemats…

Why Nellie Belle's Closet? My grandma's name was Nellie Belle. And she wore it well. Her favorite color? RED. The brighter, the better. Purses, lipstick, scarves, geraniums... a kitchen wallpapered entirely in red strawberries with placemats and a cookie jar to match. On the back of her davenport was a zigzag afghan with as many colors as you can imagine. My brother, sister, cousin & I would sometimes spend the night on a Saturday night. We'd curl up in the colorful afghan, while she served Jiffy Pop Popcorn and NeHi Grape Soda in bottles with red & white striped straws. She taught me the most efficient ways to do word searches (with a red pen). In the summer, she would let us walk to the Superette to buy as much candy as would fit in the little brown bag. Bazooka Bubble Gum, Bit O Honey, Black Jacks, Tootsie Rolls, Wax Bottle Pops and, yes, Candy Cigarettes! She would tell an occasional off-color joke and giggle like a school girl. Nellie Belle was the bees knees! She was a colorful woman with a story to tell.

Like the original, Nellie Belle's Closet is full of colorful clothes with a story to tell.
