Between Art and Craft

Since then, I have become a more focused collector targeting the years around 1900. Thus, the waste majority of items sold in NotreDamedeParis date from the period between 1850 and 1930.

This is the period of industrialization. However, most of the sacred objects are produced in small workshops and assembled by local farmers in the winter evenings to make a supplement income to the family household. This is especially true for the rosaries.

Other Items, as the Madonna carved in wood or the meerschaum carvings, required more craftsmanship. Though the designs are often reproductions of a largely repeated motive, they are artistic in their accomplishment.

The souvenir medals from the large centers of pilgrimage are probably the objects made by the greater number. Other medals and silver crosses were made as unique items by local jewelers.
