_______________________________________________________________________

While earning my BFA in Studio Art from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I began my fascination with enameling (fusing powdered glass to metal). I acquired a taste for the time-consuming process, even learning to enjoy the slight unpredictability and finicky nature of it. While maintaining a deep respect for the centuries-old, traditional techniques like cloisonne, champleve, and plique-a-jour, I became even more interested in the newer, more experimental processes...the roads slightly less traveled in enameling's history.

After moving to Seattle, I set up my own enameling studio where I could indulge in the freedom to experiment and explore both learned and self-discovered methods. It's my ultimate playground.

In the past year, I've recently dove into the world of kiln-formed glass, having a spectacular time bringing my enameling techniques to this enormous new world of cross-media possibilities. I'm currently exploring layering enamels between fused layers of transparent glass. Every time I open the kiln after a firing, it's like Christmas over and over again!

"Orange Peel" refers to a stage in the firing process of enameling, the point at which the enamel has softened and taken on an orange peel-like texture. The enamel is not yet fully "matured" (smoothed out), but is at a stage full of potential.

: : : : : enameling on copper : : : : :

Each Orange Peel Enamel pendant is made individually by hand, in a process of sometimes painstaking detail. From cleaning the copper to designing the image and careful sifting of the enamel powder, the rewarding moment is in the kiln-firing.

Watching the enamel go from granules to glass in a matter of minutes in the kiln is the defining "make or break" moment. Overfiring by mere seconds can entirely ruin a piece. And since every enamel color requires its own separate firing - and some pendants have three or four colors - doing the final firing is a thrill indeed.

Each copper enamel pendant is counter-enameled (enameled on the back) for durability and to avoid stress and warping during firing. The copper edge has been finished to a high polish... just for good looks. :)

Enameling on glass involves a similar process, using specials enamels formulated for fused glass and a much longer kiln-firing cycle. A typical glass firing is several hours long to slowly bring the glass up to and down from the peak temperature, ensuring proper annealing. This prevents internal stresses from being formed within the glass which may otherwise cause the glass to crack or break.

All of my glass pieces have undergone multiple firings to achieve the desired appearance, including an additional firing for every enamel color used and edge grinding/shaping between firings.
