Johanna's Profile

About

I grew up in Newport RI, my grandfather was head gardener on one of the large estates and I have always had an affinity for the look of those gardens. I see this reflected in a lot of my decoupage, a mix of Victorian and Cottage.

I'm still finding my voice in my decoupage, I love gothic romances, vampires and the such and hope to eventually use that inspiration too. Then of course I never know what may come to mind, inspired by an old book or piece of pottery.

I've dealt in collectibles and antiques for ten years but am happiest when I'm creating something.
I love to combine objects, such as this dress form and sheet music to make this decoupage dress form.

I prefer to use original paper items, as tempting as it is to make copies and have them for use again later. I think the different papers and print styles give items more depth. Occasionally I may need to use a home printed item, but I state so in my description. Then I use small scissors and an exacto knife to cut out the images.

This pitcher with calla lillies is one of the first items I made and one of my favorites.

Once everything is glued I use polycrylic, a water based polyrethane product to add protective layers. Sometimes as many as 20 layers are added with light sanding between layers.

So take a few moments and glance around my shop and feel free to drop back by for a visit anytime.

I now have a second shop with my twin sons Mathew and Joseph

Unfortunately this last February my son Mathew, after prolonged ill health was diagnosed with a rare cancer. A large sarcoma in his abdomen. Sarcomas are rare, and within the different sarcomas, Desmoplastic small round cell sarcoma is even rarer. This was the doctors initial diagnosis and after several months of successful treatment it has been determined that because of one different protein this sarcoma is an unknown, not even Desmoplastic.

Unfortunately my wonderful and brave son, passed away January of this year.

And I have also involved my 84 year old Mom, she makes wedding cake toppers using vintage bride and grooms and fantasy assemblages, like this fairy garden, filled with roses and a group of little fairies.
