Lyn Brown's Profile

About

I've been working as a paper artist, then bookbinder, for over 20 years, founding my company, Paper Wasp Designs, in 1990.

I am primarily self taught; literally taking books apart to figure out how they were made. Because of this, I often work outside of the traditional tools of bookbinding, making what I need as I go along. In addition, I supplement my knowledge by talking to to other artists, and bookbinding workshops at the North Bennet Street school in the North End.

My process, and my inspiration, always starts with the paper itself. Each kind of paper has it's own particular qualities: weight, color light permeability, texture and tensile strength.

Few things please me more than using a cool new paper in a way that showcases its best qualities. I'm so lucky to work with the object of my obsession!

The elements of bookbinding really appeal to me. The precision required, the paper itself, the process and the end result- a beautiful and useful object- are deeply satisfying.

Please remember that water and direct sunlight are the mortal enemies of paper, so please treat your pieces accordingly.

In addition to my love of paper, I am also deeply involved with the feral cat project. A portion of Paper Wasp's sales go towards the medical care and feeding of cats that are homeless or have been abandoned by their owners.

Enjoy, and thank you for your business!
