About

Pepe Le Moko is a husband and wife collaboration that goes back almost four decades. Our workshop is a renovated space in a funky old Coast Guard Station on Puget Sound.

The name Pepe Le Moko comes from a l937 French film of the same name. The name has always given us a chuckle and we never forgot it, so we decided to call our Etsy shop "Pepe Le Moko". We thought Pepe needed a monkey with a fez so that's where the avatar came from. That is not to say a monkey could make our jewelry, but who knows, monkeys are pretty smart.

The husband half of our duo, we'll call him 'Pepe', had a two year apprenticeship with a modernist jeweler learning fabrication techniques in San Francisco nearly 40 years ago and then went on to study with two other jewelers learning wax sculpting and casting techniques.

He has been making fine jewelry ever since. The wife half, we'll call her "Ms. Le Moko", has been making things by hand since she was 8 years old. Starting with shellcraft earrings and pins mounted on personalized cards, she sold door-to-door to unsuspecting neighbors caught off guard with nowhere to run. Glue and shells, a crafter was born!

We've handmade jewelry out of just about every viable material and are still experimenting and learning. Our inspiration can come from a l930's automobile or a piece of origami and always from that never ending source, nature. We each have our own style and sometimes our styles cross-pollinate resulting in a hybrid much more interesting than either one by itself. We make each fabricated piece from start to finish, one by one. Our rough casting is done by a professional casting house. We sculpt the original models out of wax and hand finish the cast pieces ourselves. Making things by hand is what we have always done and will continue to do. We hope that everyone who buys Pepe Le Moko jewelry will enjoy wearing it for many years to come.

Please keep checking back. We will be introducing rings and eventually adding some of our more organic style cast pieces.

We have a blog at: http:// www.pepe-le-moko.com
where we put up some of our favorite things from around the web.

We also sell vintage things at our Etsy store AU REVOIR.
