Jane Bignell's Profile

About

My name is really Jane and this is the story of how my grandma inspired the name for my shop. My Grandmas was one of 13 surviving children living in the industrial north of England and her mother (my great grandmother) had a sister who had married and moved to London. She ran a stall with her husband on Petticoat Lane, London and to help out her sister she would sent clothes parcels. As my Grandma became a teenager, she aspired to be a daring flapper and would snaffle up anything from the clothes parcel in that style.

I started the Petticoat Jane label because I wanted to offer one-off clothes with a vintage twist to people who like me love vintage styles and the quality of clothes from the past. I use genuine vintage patterns to make fabulous quality clothes that will last.

I started the Petticoat Jane label because I wanted to offer one-off clothes with a vintage twist to people who like me love vintage styles and the quality of clothes from the past. I use genuine vintage patterns to make fabulous quality clothes that will last.

I have always loved vintage clothes, their quality and fabric is better than we get today, but am always worried about damaging them, so only wear vintage on special occasions. For daywear I tend to choose vintage fusion a mix of modern and my handmade vintage inspired clothes. I find inspiration from my massive vintage pattern collection and fashion history books. Through Petticoat Jane I sell my vintage inspired creations using my Petticoat Jane label. Where I can, I source vintage fabrics and notions for my clothes designs, which make them unique one-offs and by using vintage fabrics I am recycling and re-using.

Protecting our environment is important to me, so I like to re-cycle and re-use where I can. As well as using vintage patterns, vintage fabrics and vintage notions in my designs, I re-use and recycle packaging, boxes and envelopes to post items to my customers and would encourage everyone to do the same.

My daughter Frann has joined me in my shop with her own range of designs. She has her own department selling her unique designs under label FrannB Designs - why not check it out.
