About

As a lifelong collector of Victorian newspaper clip, cards (funeral, calling, post, and cigarette), and other ephemera, I started collecting vintage patterns as a sort of companion to my other collections.

As my collection grew, people began asking to purchase pieces so that they could cut them up and actually make the clothing. As a collector, I was horrified at the thought. But as a lover of fashion, I was intrigued. How could I use the patterns without cutting them?

From that, Picnic Girl was born.

In this shop, you will find high quality, exact copies, of the patterns in my collection. Each pattern includes an enlarged color copy of the front and back cover, complete copies of instructions, information on sizing the pattern to fit your needs, and exact copies of each pattern sheet.

You will also find artwork created from copies of items my collection.

Why Picnic Girl Vintage Reproduction Rather Than Original?

Sizing - When you purchase a vintage pattern that says that it is size 18, you expect a modern size 18. But that isn't what you get. Size 18 in 1954 is actually a size 10 today or more accurately, between a non-standard size 9 and a size 10. It gets even more complicated when you look at European patterns.

With all Picnic Girl Vintage Patterns, not only do you receive an exact copy of the original pattern, you receive easy to follow instructions as to re-sizing the pattern to ANY modern size.

Durability - Patterns are typically printed on tissue paper, which even when brand new, is very delicate. Most of my patterns are between 40 and 90 years old, some even older. Picnic Girl Vintage Patterns are reproduced on flexible, but durable drafting paper. You can change dimensions, cut, recut, and use these reproductions over and over again, without damaging the patterns. You can also make notes with pen or pencil on the patterns without tearing or damaging.

Terminology & Fabrics - Terminology, names of fabrics, and ideas about acceptable fabrics change over time. Picnic Girl Vintage Patterns provides updated instructions with current terminology.

Preservation - I collect vintage patterns from around the world. Most are rare and some are extremely rare. By selling vintage reproductions, I can preserve the originals, while offering sewers and designers amazing, vintage clothing patterns. You don't need to worry about damaging delicate paper or purchasing an incomplete pattern. You get durable, updated patterns while the originals are stored safely.
