Hello and welcome to my store!

ROOTS:
Pooka {puca} is an ancient celtic/ irish word for a ghost or a spirit, and I have always been drawn to the fairy realms and mythical mystical places that are everywhere here in Ireland. From my earliest drawings of toadstools and pixies and drawing personalised colorfairies for my little schoolfriends, I always loved the magical mystery that infuses a sparkle to our everyday seen world. I feel inspired with a playful whimsy and ethereal feeling, that I try to convey in some sense in my creations.
I started making clothes for my dolls when I was small, and as I got older, I began to make clothes for myself, with sometimes 'interesting' results! I was always making things, not just clothes, and always had a passion for art in all its forms. I did a degree in Archaeology and English when I left school, and later studied Craft for 2…

I started making clothes for my dolls when I was small, and as I got older, I began to make clothes for myself, with sometimes 'interesting' results! I was always making things, not just clothes, and always had a passion for art in all its forms. I did a degree in Archaeology and English when I left school, and later studied Craft for 2 years which gave me a good grounding in Textiles, Print, Ceramics etc. The last few years I have been obsessed with making clothes, but I do hope to pick up a paintbrush again someday too...maybe painted clothes, hmmm....

WHERE:
I have my workshop in an old converted grainstore by the sea here in the very south of Ireland, where I create unique and one of a kind clothing and accessories to add a bit of magic to your life! I use preloved and recycled materials which are all piled wild and tumbling from baskets and spilling out of sacks and shelves in my studio...(it may not be very easy to find things but at least it helps insulate my space !;).
Nature in her myriad forms inspires me, from the wild gleaming ultramarine of the Atlantic Ocean, to the flaming reds and golds that crisp Autumn days gift us. I am blessed to have it all outside my door, so when inspiration is running low, I step outside and go for a windswept walk along the cliff or go pick bluebells in the woods.

INSPIRATION:
I love fabrics and materials in rich jewel colours and I love to use silks, shells and natural materials to embellish my work. I am developing a taste for gentler shades, natural tones and earthy tints, they have their own subtle quality which I am appreciating more and more these days. I must confess however, that my first love is the bright bold colours of summer flowers in full bloom, or the rich wild hues of the swirl of a gypsy's skirt.. Old textiles that I gather on my travels feature in my work, as I love the exotic dreams they suggest by their very presence. I source my other materials from anywhere and everywhere -friends, charity shops, flea markets, retired dressmakers...Fabric of all kinds attracts me and I love to play with colours and textures and to breathe new life in to something that has been cast away. I am inspired by the materials and fabrics first, and tend to work in an intuitive way, following the dream of the fabric rather than having a set design in mind.

PROCESS:
I work hard to make sure each piece I make is made really well to the highest standard of my ability, sometimes spending way too much time on one item, just to get it right! I feel a sense of pride in my work, and enjoying crafting something beautiful. Its actually an honour and a priveledge for me to make clothes for people, and when I sell at markets and festivals, I get such a buzz from meeting the people who buy my work, as its funny how often that an item of clothes just seems made for that person even though I didnt know who they were going to be! I put so much love in to each piece, that in a way its like each one is my creative baby and I love to know they are going to good loving homes! (is that wierd???!?). I love the idea that it is going to be part of someones life story for years to come...

I have just finished my final year of studying fashion design, and have been trying to balance my college work and business- its tricky at times! I am delighted to have been awarded Mallow College of Design and Tailoring Designer of the Year 2010 and in 2011 and I also had the honour of being recieving Highly Commended City and Guilds Medal of Excellence 2011.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any special requests or ideas you would like to share or commission..Thanks for visiting Pooka!
