Justine's Profile

About

Hello crafty folks! I'm Justine. Maybe you wanna know a little bit more about who is behind these photos?

What can I say? I love to make all kinds of things. My first tie-dye experience was back in the 90's. Now hubby's gotta keep his white t's on lock-down in our house! I almost scream with delight when I stain my shirt, cuz that means more dyeing time for me!

Just before the birth of my nephew in 2004, I began learning the batik process. I made several infant hand-dyed batik pieces that became his shower gift--all inside a nice basket. I bought some wax, already had the dyes, a bunch of shirts and other baby garments and got to work. Then I realized how much time and energy went into each and every piece. Looking the pile of shirts ahead of me, I wondered what I'd gotten myself into! I gained so much appreciation…

I gained so much appreciation for the intricate work done by the Balinese and others who do great batik work. After all the hard work, and seeing the beauty reveal itself after all the wax had been boiled out, I was hooked!

I have been sewing and making clothing since 1993 and am completely self-taught. Everything I have accomplished I have learned thru trial and error, reading lots of books, magazines and website articles and by teaching and learning from others. Boy, did I get some errors! I would try and try until I got it right. I will seriously rip out a top-stitching line if it ain't sewn strait. I guess I'm anal like that. . .

My most favorite time of year, during the Spring and Summer, you will find me vending with my friends at festivals and fairs. The friends and family I have created and connected with at these venues have become a deep and important part of my soul.

Come October, you'll find me for the 5th year in a row now at our hometown Apple Butter Festival. Everyone in town waits all year round for this event that draws some 40,000 people. From sterling silver fine hand-crafted jewelry to hand-dyed batik t-shirts, I keep myself busy with a variety of mediums.

In this era of rushed lifestyles and a higher demand for lower-cost items, it is time now to support the handmade artisans that create things that take us all back to our roots.

What comes around goes around.

You should be aware that there are 5 cats here living with me. Those with severe allergies, please convo me and I can wash and package the item in a cat-free home for you!

Unless specified otherwise, all clothing items will be shipped via USPS Priority Mail. Smaller items may be mailed First Class.

Please read my website for more info about me and my work.
