About

Hello

I´m Helena, an architect from Portugal.

I started my experimental jewellery project with minimalist hand cut acrylic bracelets, after my son was born.

The need for creation is in me since I can remember.
I learn crochet, knitting, embroidery, baking. cooking, in my summer afternoons at my grandmothers house, and since I can remember I draw plants of houses, not square and triangle in the top houses,  but plants with doors and windows marked in places, and my college notebooks are full of abstract drawings.

The bureaucracies of my day job impelled me to  create and experiment, that I do mostly at my garage, because working with acrylic is very messy.

I design the image, saw, sand and polish all the pieces by hand.

I love all pieces, because they are made with love and care, searching for peace of mind, and trying to learn new techniques.

I buy the acrylic sheets of 50-60cm x 1,10 m approximately. Study the design of the bracelets, and rings, materials to be applied.

Thereafter, the acrylic is cut with a jewellery saw, filed, sanded and polished, all handmade. When hot, The acrylic is molded according to the desired shape.

A bracelet takes two to 6 hours depending on the design. Rings are faster, because the surface to be saw, sand and polish is much smaller, and take about an one to two hours.

You can see some pictures of the process on my blog http://helenaribeiromej.blogspot.pt/2010/12/handmade-acrylic-bracelets-process.html or on my Flickr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/helena_ribeiro/5244691168/
