I live on 30 acres, a mile from the ocean in a small coastal town with our family of 4 We live in an off grid solar powered home. We enjoy homesteading (or the efforts in trying to!)
SOAP: The pioneers made soap with their wood ashes. Soaked them in a barrel with water over and over again until it made lye. They collected the grease and rendered lard and suet etc and the two together is what made soap. The process is like baking but more like chemistry. Lye is caustic and when oils and butters are added at temperatures relative to each other they have a beautiful reaction called saponification. In cold process the soap must cure or be left for a few weeks I leave mine for at least 4-6 wks so that the soap will be mild and a nice hard bar. Hot process is when the oils and lye (sodium hydroxide) are cooked slowly for close to an hour and it heats up, and speeds up the saponification process, so you may use the soap that very…

With out the lye, there is no soap unless you want a detergent soap and I can't pronounce most of the ingredients on a store bought bar of soap!
