About

I thought that my late mother's incredible artistic talent had passed me over, but now with the Etsy community by my side I feel it living inside of me.

Looking back, I see it had always been present.

Let me take you to Valentine's Day, second grade. We were given instructions for an in-class art project making a Heart Person from colored construction paper.

My teacher gave specific assembly instructions, as well as directions for drawing the face. A large heart for the face/body, accordion-style arms leading to heart hands. Round circle eyes, black dot nose and simple curved line mouth.

Hmmm, my 7yr old self thought. My mother had handmade the most gorgeous doll for me and she had a beautifully painted face. I proceeded to add big round circles to the eyes and lots of long curled eyelashes. Instead of a black dot, I added a small 'c' shape for the nose. Finally, I drew a set of full puckered lips on her curved-line mouth.

I remember seeing all the Heart People hanging in the hall, mine beaming out with her wide eyes and full smiling lips. I also remember being admonished by my teacher for 'not following directions'. No matter, I had my mother's unwavering support.

Alas, I no longer have my mother to encourage and inspire me, but I hope that her artistic energy can pour through me into my work and be enjoyed in lives and homes of many.
