Making Remembering Flags for Gold Star Families is my tribute to the Memory of their Fallen Hero, their sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, moms and dads, nieces and nephews. There is no greater sacrifice one can ask of an American than become a member of the Gold Star Moms. Each Gold Star Mom shares their precious photos and information with me. Their Patriotic Remembering Flag can be displayed outside or inside. The patriotic garden flags I use as the basis of the specific Remembering Flag are American made high quality flags purchased from Custom Décor, Inc, in Dover, Delaware.

I have created a folder on my Facebook Page: www.Facebook.com/RememberingQuilts and Website: www.RememberingQuilts.com to share their Flags and the Memory of their sons and daughters.

My inspiration comes from the people I am making my Remembering Quilts, Pillows, Flags, Tote Bags and Fabric Panels for. My quilt design is basic because the photo collages are the focal point, up to 8 photos on each collage and up to 10 collages for a quilt. I send several choices for fabric and because I make many Remembering Quilts for Gold Star Moms, I have several choices of patriotic material including the gold and blue stars within the quilt. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=385280001571373&set=a.113764925389550.17581.102337263198983&type=1&theater A Gold Star Mom is sending special quilt fabric to use in her quilt. I will work on the quilt after we finish her 10 photo collages. She bought the fabric before she connected with me, hoping she could use it in a quilt because it had such special memories.

My inspiration often comes through FB messages and emails, from the many Families who share their precious photos, special words and stories with me. I have been so inspired and I will continue making Remembering Flags at no cost to Gold Star Moms and Dads. I have a photo album of the Remembering Flags on my FB page: RememberingQuilts, giving people the opportunity to Honor and Remember our Fallen Heroes in a special way with their precious photos printed on fabric. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.391257744306932.1073741828.102337263198983&type=3

As a Blue Star Mom of a Navy son and Coast Guard daughter-in-law, and wife of a retired Naval Aviator, this is my way to provide some comfort to Gold Star Moms. The day after they were married, my son deployed to Iraq with his Navy Prowler Squadron and his wife deployed to South America with the Coast Guard. I helped them stay connected while he flew his jet to Iraq and she was at sea. While flying a late night mission over Baghdad in 2007, my son took a photo of a sunrise I now use as the background in the collages. He is now with a Carrier Air Wing deployed overseas.

On my Etsy shop, I sell products with “Photos on Fabric” where additional Remembering Flags can be purchased to Honor and Remember your Hero. Your Hero could be someone special who was in the Military, Police Force, lost on 9/11, or anything else that makes your hero special to you.

In Bob & Lee Woodruff’s book, In An Instant, Lee described how much her children’s’ visits helped Bob during his recovery from injuries sustained while in Iraq and Lee and I often discuss this bond. The strong bond you feel with your sons and daughters is why I want to make my Remembering Flags for Gold Star Mothers and make others aware on Etsy for others who may have a special Hero Close to Their Heart.

I began my mission to learn how to "Print Photos on Fabric" when I lost my mother. I, like so many others, was perplexed by her issues with Dementia and Alzheimer’s (or perhaps my issues). Since then I have become determined to learn more of what can be done for the many people who must deal with memories in their waning years, or memory loss due to injury or illness and bring relief to patients, family members and even caregivers.

My passion is to assist families with Veterans dealing with Traumatic Brain Injury or Post Traumatic Stress or families caring for members with Alzheimer’s or other forms of Dementia. Itis an amazing experience to help families tell a story with photo collages for their Remembering Quilts and Pillows.

Reminiscence therapy with photographs and labeling is simply providing external artifacts, which could have helped to stimulate the memory of my Mom. I chose “Remembering Quilts” because to me it is a blend of the best technology has to offer today with the traditional warmth and caring of a family quilt.

Large labeled photos for easy viewing personalized on a warm and comfortable quilt can stimulate memories with family members and even facilitate caregiver interaction when family members are not present. The quilt may be made to fit nicely around the family member while seated or in a wheel chair or can be smaller if desired. The idea of a quilt of pictures stems from the quilt providing warmth and comfort to the family member. Cold extremities are common among the healthiest of seniors or people suffering from illness or injuries, the result of a natural reduction in circulation.

The quilts can be machine washed which is generally required if in an assisted care facility. The actual photos and the labeling of the people in the photos are provided by the customer. Each quilt is personalized by its unique family photos. It is the conversation about the photo that stimulates the memory and enhances its effectiveness. I print the photos and their labeling into the fabric of the quilt. Whether by family member or a care giver, each and every mention of the quilt’s contents becomes a unique opportunity to stimulate the loved one’s memory and the remembering by directing their attention to one of the photos, identifying the picture and asking a question about it.

In addition to the photos, it may be advantageous to incorporate within the non-photo area the therapeutic aspects of a "fidget quilt." A fidget quilt is particularly useful for Alzheimer's patients who exhibit greater nervous tension in their hands. The fidget quilt can be adorned with a variety of buttons to hold the attention of the Alzheimer's patient and can provide hours of tactile entertainment while adding the natural comfort that comes from a good quality of flannel backing. Many experienced Alzheimer's caregivers swear by the effectiveness of the fidget quilt. For this purpose two textured fabric choices are available. The textured material’s color will be a neutral color so as to blend in with the other fabric colors and not detract from the photo emphasis. Other options can be added but should remain simple. Buttons can be a variety of sizes and shapes materials and can be provided by either the customer or me.

I can’t help but believe my time with my mom would have greatly benefitted from such a quilt concept to stimulate remembering.

And I can’t but also believe Remembering Quilts has the potential to stimulate the memory and bring comfort to wounded warriors with severe traumatic head injuries and people undergoing cancer treatment. Remembering Quilts can also celebrate the memory of a loved one.

I have made and donated several Remembering Quilts to Veterans with TBI since 2011. It is such an exhilarating experience to work with the wives and share in the excitement when the veterans receive their Remembering Quilts.

Remembering, Helen
