Beverly Bentley's Profile

A Legacy Worth Sharing

My name is Beverly Bentley and I learned about art first from Captain Kangaroo and Mrs. Satterwhite, who always said, “Make the back of your work as pretty as the front.” It’s a lesson I still put into practice. I went on to major in Art at West Texas A&M and fell in love with the design process. My greatest joy comes from helping a customer bring together a million wonderful ideas into a cohesive customized work of art. One of my favorite designs was a pair of pistols with “Mr” and “Mrs” carved into the handles commissioned by a sweet couple for their wedding. They sent me a picture a year later of the piece I’d made them signed by Miranda Lambert the country western singer! They’d gotten her to sign it after attending one of her concerts. I thought that was pretty neat! Now, after five years on Etsy, my art has traveled to almost all fifty states and all across…

But none of this means anything without mentioning my sweet grandma, “MawMaw”, Rilla Bee Bentley. Why? She lived her life full of love and strength, and with an indomitable will that overcame heavy obstacles and unimaginable tragedy with grace and dignity. At only 8 years old, on a small farm in Arkansas, she endured the loss of seven siblings and both of her parents within a three month period to a terrible measles epidemic. She went to live with an older married sister after their deaths, and as a young woman fell in love with the younger brother of her sister’s husband, Robert Lee. But calamity had not finished it's terrible reign on my sweet grandmother. While pregnant with their fourth child, she lost the love of her life to the Spanish Flu. She was 25 years old. It is remarkable to me that she could overcome such adversity so early in life, and still grow old making apple pie and showing kindness and love to everyone she met.

Since you’ve been so kind to listen, please take this story with you as you browse my shop. I hope it inspires you the way it has me. And know that each plaque in my shop was made by a woman who carries a legacy of tenacity, ferocity, and love, all rolled into one, thanks to one very special lady, my MawMaw, Rilla Bee.
