My name is Anna, and I am the heart and hands behind Roots Soap Co. I have been making soap and salves since I was a little girl for my mother's company, and still use her base recipe and the knowledge she passed on to me about natural ingredients that are close to the earth and truly beneficial to the human body.

My process and ingredients:
My base recipe consists simply of rainwater, lye, coconut oil, tallow*, and olive oil. Once the oils and lye have saponified, I add a combination of pure essential oils, natural clays and organic botanicals, fine oils for extra moisturizing, and…

Once the oils and lye have saponified, I add a combination of pure essential oils, natural clays and organic botanicals, fine oils for extra moisturizing, and organic local herbs, flowers, spices and roots that are healing or beneficial to the skin. All of my ingredients are chosen with beauty, quality and benefit in mind for each body that will enjoy them. Each batch of soap that I weigh, stir, pour, cut and form with my hands is created with pride, love, many years experience and a rich history. I hope that each person who uses my products are touched by what is behind them.

*My use of tallow: Tallow is the hard fat from the backbone of the cow and is the traditional fat used in making soap. It takes the least amount of processing of any fat or oil used in making soap, and creates a hard, long lasting and moisturizing bar with amazing lather. I purchase mine from a local butcher shop and render it myself. I consider it the often wasted bi-product of the leather and meat industries, and using it in soap facilitates the use of the whole animal. If you like my products but need a vegan alternative, feel free to contact me for shops that also have high quality natural products similar to mine.

If you are in the Midwest or Canada, check out my soaping sister's soap companies.
My sister Jen at Two Trees Farm in northeastern Ontario has some lovely soaps that she makes on her farm. Sometimes in the spring the calf or the lambs might wander in along with her children to take a peek at the process. http://twotreessoapco.blogspot.com/

Holly is a bestie of both Jen and I and makes her soap from her home in Ypsilanti, MI. She is also a florist and has an outstanding eye for beauty and style. http://www.thelittleflowersoaps.etsy.com
