In 1964 when I was a wee girl of 9, my Great Aunt Lily took me to my first church rummage sale. She gave me a few coins and let me peruse the tables of nicknacks and cast offs.
I found a tall Chinese vase, ornate, fragile and so thin it was translucent. 10 cents was written on its base. Nearby was a beautiful black tea pot, with shiny gold swirls and a pretty floral design. I paid a whole quarter for that piece.
I came home from that rummage sale experience a new woman! I had been bitten by the collecting bug. Since that Saturday morning so long ago, I have been a passionate detective always on the lookout for discarded treasures. By the way, I still have the old vase and teapot, and though Aunt Lily has been gone for decades, I think of her often when I find myself rooting around in dusty boxes of history…
