About

Sage Reynolds is an artist and designer. He runs the Four Hands Design Studio, which he founded with his partner Colman Rutkin, in New York in 1977. About

Sage Reynolds is an artist and designer. He runs the Four Hands Design Studio, which he founded with his partner Colman Rutkin, in New York in 1977. He revitalized the paste paper as a decorative paper in the late 1970's in response to a need for variety in the marketplace. His large sheets provided a fresh and more useful alternative to the small printed and marbled sheets available at the time. He incorporated Japanese techniques of gilding and is probably the only paste paper maker in America that offers a variety of gilded embellishments in a variety of metals as well as gold. He is a skilled hand binder in his own studio and occasionally teaches binding and paste paper making at the Center for Book Arts in Manhattan.

Over the years his paste paper designs have used or commissioned for direct use in binding and wall covering, they have been used to cover books and boxes, make murals and as the final surface of folding screens. They have also been reproduced as fabrics, glass tableware and gift wrap. His clients included Elizabeth Arden, Esteè Lauder, Calvin Klein and Karl Lagerfeld as well as architects and other designers.

His art work mediums include large scale paintings in oil, miniature paintings in gouache, paper tapestries and linoleum cut prints. His art is in collections in Europe and America.

In this past year, his tapestries and paintings have been shown in Manhattan, Long Island, and Staten Island, New York.
He produces gift wrap and stationery designs for Caspari, tableware designs for PTS America and designs computer fonts for T26. He is studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology to become a silversmith, with the goal of producing Fine Silver Table and Flatware.
