About

I live and work on the coast of Maine, and I love to make jewelry. I have been working in gold and silver for over 20 years, and have had the Sandpiper brand for over 17 years. I work out of my shop in Scarborough where I create original commissions for my customers, create my signature Sandpiper line, and ship my work out to galleries andcustomers. In order to make my work available to a wider audience, I am happy to post a sample of my designs here on Etsy. My hope is to widen my customer base and offer my designs and service to a national audience. Aside from making Sandpiper Jewelry, I also enjoy teaching jewelry making classes and metalsmithing techniques. I teach youth classes at the Maine College of Art in the Saturday Class program during the school year and Art Camp during the summer. I also teach periodic adult education classes and take private students in my studio. I believe in quality craftsmanship and sturdy…

I believe in quality craftsmanship and sturdy construction. If there is a short cut, I will invariably take the long way to get something done, as the process is important to me as much as the end result. I like to have complete control of every design consideration at every aspect of building a piece. So where short cuts (pre-made components, bezel cups, etc.) would make the work more generic, going the long way makes my work more individual. I believe that wearing jewelry is about personal expression, and so I want to create works that are as individual as my customers are. That being said, my favorite work is the custom work when a person comes to me and asks me to make them something they have only seen in their mind. My work then becomes an adventure where each week I am challenging myself with what I will be building when a customer makes a request. I stand behind my work and guarantee all of it to be as I represent it here, and of the highest quality. I hope every piece I sell will be that customer’s favorite piece of jewelry, cherished, loved and worn with pride. I imagine a day far in the future where my work is passed down over generations and treasured by the descendants of my customers, then as the centuries pass and then millennia, I dream of future archaeologists finding the pieces you see here, just as we appreciate the work of the ancients our cultures have unearthed from the Sumerians, Etruscans, and Mespotamians. With that in my mind as I craft my work, I honor the intrinsic value of the materials I work with, and strive to make the finest jewelry that can be made in our times. I can be reached at my shop at (207)767-8090 during business hours, and am online on Facebook, Twitter and at www.sandpiperdesigns.com.
