Celeste Sheets' Profile

About

I'm a life-long lover of vintage stuff, any stuff, but especially fashion-related things; and I've also always loved the natural world. I try to express both those passions in my work, mixing the natural and the artifical, the high and the low, the classic and the new. Savage Juliette combines in its name this paradox, the juxtaposition of salty and sweet, wild and cultivated, imagination and reality.

I come from a long line of craftsmen/women: my parents and sister are artists, my mom is an amazing seamstress, my grandparents can make anything from 1/24th scale miniature railcars to gorgeous afghans to leather car upholstery, and my great-grandpa Poppy even made jewelry besides being a tool-and-die pattern maker during the Great Depression. (He also claimed to have invented a perpetual motion machine, but that's another story!)

The other thing thay all have in common is an off-kilter sense of humor, and so Savage Juliette has a touch of whimsey, no matter if it's a serious statement-piece necklace or a pair of casual everyday chandeliers. I hope you'll love wearing Savage Juliette as much as I love making it!

I think it's important to continually grow as a craftsperson and artist, so I am constantly adding new tools and materials to my skillset. You'll find handcrafted sterling silver, copper, and brass findings in my shop, as well as a variety of natural patinas used for centuries by jewelry artists.

I try to keep my work ethical as well as aesthetic, too. Supporting the rich American and European heritage of jewelry making is important to me: I search for both old factory stock and new supplies made by US manufacturers, and the glass items I use are either of vintage origin or made today in the famous century-old factories of the Czech Republic. I strive to keep my jewelry lead- and nickel-free, and would never use a material that I wouldn't feel safe wearing myself. Years of working in the vintage clothing and jewelry business is the foundation of my inspiration and respect for history and my forebearers: I will not destroy a piece of vintage jewelry to make a new one.

I hope when you browse my shop you'll see the love, care, thought and respect that goes into each piece! And I hope you'll find something to inspire your own dreams of beauty, too.

Warmest, savage regards,
Celeste
