Sidonie Yang's Profile

About

My name is Sidonie Yang, and I was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, but met my husband, Shawn Chong, in Taipei, Taiwan. We both lived in Taiwan and also in three of Canada's biggest cities. Currently, we reside within driving distance of Shawn's parents in Ontario, Canada.

I studied design in the past, but was always most interested in handmade and eco-friendly things. I love things that are beautiful... and things are twice as beautiful if they're re-used, re-purposed, re-thought and re-born. I've taken a real liking to the material, "washable paper," which is genuinely paper, but is extremely durable and beautiful. You can use it for years without it becoming tattered and torn... but it's still biodegradable.

I first discovered washable paper while living in Vancouver in 2011. At the time, I didn't have much to do and thus started to craft things on my own to make use of my days. I was experimenting with different types of materials and also discovering my own hidden hand crafting talents. I tried out various types of cloth, recycled plastic bags and a few other things - but it was washable paper which really caught my eye.

So, I sat down and designed a few things using washable paper that I thought would be useful. Luckily, I discovered Etsy via one of my friends and discovered a whole world of like-minded individuals. I soon listed a few of my completed designs and eventually got my first sale. It was very exciting!

Since then, I haven't stopped designing, making and running around. In the beginning, I was able to handle everything myself... from the design all the way down to the shipping... but eventually, I started to enlist the help of Shawn, and he helps me as much as he can. So, we're almost a two-person team!

I can clearly see how my design and crafting skills have evolved over the years, and I am extremely proud that I have come this far. I can honestly say that it's not easy to dedicate yourself to something for years... but when you see your skills and your craft grow, it's a special feeling.
