Esmeralda's Profile

About

My name is Esmeralda Woestenenk and I am a jewelry maker and scientist.

Jewelry making is something that I started doing in recent years, but I have always felt the need to do something artistic and creative. It has just taken a while before I figured out what that something was.

I have a Master of Science in molecular biology and a PhD in biochemistry, so jewelry making is not how I make a living. I find science fascinating and it's wonderful to work with something you like so much. In the lab I often use my fine motor skills, which comes in handy in my jewelry making too.

Early 2009 I did a class in Precious Metal Clay (PMC). It was something I had unconsciously looked for during a long time. Imagine being able to make your own silver jewelry without complex machinery and traditional silversmithing. With PMC you can even accomplish things that a silversmith cannot. I was hooked right away. After a while I started testing silversmithing and now I try to combine the two techniques in a way that is truly me.

As for themes in my jewelry, nature is my biggest inspiration. I like organic forms and nature makes them the prettiest. In the background of my pictures I often use nature too. As a Dutch citizen who has moved to Sweden, it is a new experience to have access to almost unspoiled nature in your backyard.
