Deirdre Harris' Profile

About

Hello, and welcome!

I am an architect, and have been practicing design in the form of landscapes, buildings, graphics, and objects for over 20 years. After spending the last decade of this time trying to express intention through a computer, I recently rediscovered the pleasure of feeling and making things with my own two hands.

My mother is a retired textile artist. Two years ago, I discovered a pile of her sketchbooks from the 1960’s, when she still lived in Scandinavia and dreamed of being a surface designer for Marimekko. After arriving in North America a couple years later, she gravitated into a high profile career as a textile artist and tucked her earlier dreams into a box that made its way to our attic storage room.

The sketches in the forgotten books, full of happiness and joy, caused me to ponder where they might have led her and inspired me to explore with pattern on fabric. I chose water-based inks for my health, and work with 100% linen for so many reasons: its rich history, my own memories of growing up with it, its honest texture, and because it ages so beautifully and gracefully.

Since beginning my own explorations, I have learned much about linen, ink, and printing, although I suspect I've only barely begun to scratch the surface. I've also learned about how important it is to think through how things are crafted and finished, to think about how things are used, and how they might be hung and stored and treated. I do my best to carefully consider everything and to craft as precisely as it would take to make my mother proud.

These items are designed, printed, and sewn by me in my home. A few of the designs are mine, and a few are modifications of things I discovered in my mother’s sketchbooks (where this is the case, I will make it clear). I hope you enjoy them and that they add to the beauty, comfort, and utility of your home and your life.
