I am a servant of The Most High, a disciple of Jesus Christ. He is the beginning and ending of my life. And He has taken great care of my family and me even thru the last year, which has been rather rough.

I got started making buttons after I quit my construction job. OK, I didn’t actually quit. I fell of a 2nd story roof and broke my left wrist as well as two vertebrae in my lower back.

(No nerve damage.) My parents invited my family (wife and four kids under 5) and I to recuperate at their home in Florida and while there I thought to convert an old hobby into a new business. (with much less risk of bodily injury)

I learned the basics of ceramics as a boy when it was suggested to my grandmother as good therapy while she fought terminal cancer. I continued to assist my mother in her basement ceramic business thru high school. And my first two jobs were in ceramic shops. I have since become a jack-of-all-trades (master of none?) working as a fry cook, as a copy and print shop manager, in several departments of a small office supply company, counselor-teacher at a juvenile facility and other things along the way. And lastly, as mentioned, in the construction industry.

Having done all of that and more, to be coming back to something I learned and enjoyed as a child is a great pleasure. Not to mention less risky than working twenty feet of the ground. My mother has continued her interest in ceramics all these years so it was quite natural and easy to return to it while staying with her.

Along with ceramics I love to work with natural media and, since I am a fourth-generation scrounger, now almost everything I see, natural or manmade, has the potential to become a button. Repurposing is a great concept.

I am always asking myself, “What can I make out of this?” (Look for the buttons I made out of my plastic back brace.) I’m always looking for ideas so I’d love to hear yours for what might make an interesting button.
