Rowan Taylor's Profile

About

Hi Everybody, my name is Rowan and I'm a blacksmith.

Although I live in Wales, my Smithy is in Rural Shropshire, where I have taken on the lease of a disused canal forge, which has recently been restored with care by the Canal and River Trust. The Forge was built in 1805 by Thomas Telford as part of the canal infrastructure, but had been empty for 30 years before I took it over at the start of September 2013.

I began forging as a bladesmith, before moving on to blacksmithing. After three years of forging in my spare time, I applied to the National School of Blacksmithing in Hereford, where due to my previous experience, I was put straight through to the second year of the technical course. I completed my first year there with 9/9 distinctions and an award for "Most improved Student". The second year, I took away 12/12 distinctions and an…

The second year, I took away 12/12 distinctions and an award for "Best Student" from Hereford College of Technology, "Best Blacksmith" from the National School of Blacksmithing, a "Young Entrepreneur Award" from the Federation of Small Businesses and the "Stanley Allcard Cup" from the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths in the City of London, where I went for a formal meal and ceremony.

Following this I applied for and received a place on the NHIG Heritage Blacksmithing Bursary, during which I travelled up and down the country, working with different smiths, engineers and conservators in order to learn restoration and conservation of heritage ironwork. I produced a full portfolio of my work and a journeyman piece, finishing the bursary in August 2013 with flying colours and being awarded the prize for "Best Portfolio".

It is my intention to produce high quality, affordable, bespoke ironwork for individuals and organisations, both bespoke and of my own design, alongside restoration work and historical reproductions.

I have worked with plenty of different types of metals, such as brass, bronze, copper, stainless steel, aluminium, carbon steel and of course wrought iron and mild steel.

Don't forget to check-out the South Saxon Forge facebook page. There are pictures of other forged items and coursework which aren't for sale on Etsy. It's also another way of contacting me!
